What is psychotherapy? What are the benefits and are there any risks?

Psychotherapy is primarily a talk-based treatment that can be helpful for a wide range of mental health concerns and conditions. It can assist in managing and coping with a range of symptoms related to thoughts, feelings, mood changes, behavioral concerns and memory. As it is delivered through a therapeutic relationship, finding a good fit with your therapist is very important. You can find out more about scheduling a free consultation to meet your therapist before scheduling a session by visiting “Get Started”.

There are many benefits to psychotherapy including the opportunity to express and share your deepest concerns with someone who can provide non-judgmental support. Psychotherapy has been shown to assist in improving coping ability, emotion regulation, behavioral changes, goal setting and achievement, and overall wellbeing. Some people may find that participation in psychotherapy brings about an increase in symptoms, which is usually temporary, but where it is always important to discuss with your therapist in order to make any necessary changes to reduce distress.

How long are the sessions and what can I expect?

A free 20 minute consultation is available in order to meet with your therapist and discuss any concerns. Regular sessions are scheduled for 50 minutes. Arrangements for shorter or longer sessions can be made upon request.

During your first session you can expect to go over any required documents including the consent and confidentiality form and client intake history form. You will have access to these documents in advance. The consultation and first session will assist in both getting to know your therapist and in providing them with an overview of your concerns while beginning the process of setting goals and areas of focus for future sessions. Future sessions will be guided by a collaborative process using an integrated eclectic approach matched to your preferences. All sessions will take place virtually, which can be done either by phone or video, according to your preference.

What is telehealth therapy and how do I know if it is the right fit for me?

Telehealth therapy provided by Turnpage Counselling is much the same as traditional in-person counselling in that you will meet with your therapist at the designated time face to face, but utilizing a online secured virtual platform from the comfort of your home. However, according to your preference, the option is available to do sessions by phone. The only equipment you will need for your sessions is a phone and/or laptop, computer or tablet with access to reliable internet. All sessions take place on a secured PHIPA (Personal Health Information Protection Act) compliant platform. A virtual therapy option can be beneficial for many people for a variety of reasons including those who are hesitant to attend in-person, people living in remote locations where services are limited, and anyone wanting a convenient flexible option to traditional therapy that can be done from your home and/or office.

What happens if I have to cancel/change an appointment?

I require that you provide at minimum 48 hours notice in order to cancel or reschedule an appointment. Sessions cancelled with less than 48 hours notice will be charged at full rate. Sometimes, of course, life happens. In exceptional circumstances, missed appointments will be considered for exemption from fees. It is highly encouraged and recommended that more than 48 hours notice is provided to ensure ongoing availability of your preferred time slot(s) and to provide ample opportunity for rescheduling.

What does Registered Psychotherapist mean?

In Ontario, psychotherapy is deemed a controlled act which should only be performed by a qualified professional. Registered Psychotherapists, under the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario, have completed the necessary education and training requirements to use the protected title. In addition to the initial training requirements, registered psychotherapists must continue to pursue ongoing professional development, as well as follow the ethical practices and guidelines outlined by the CRPO.

Members with an RP status have completed all of the required training and education and are covered under insurance plans which include psychotherapy. If you have any concerns about whether psychotherapy or services under an RP will be covered by your insurance provider you can request a sample invoice to present to your provider for verification.
